McDonalds Australia launches Birthday McFlurry with custard pie, caramel sauce

In these uncertain times it’s nice to cling to some normality – like the fact that no matter what meal or time of day it is, there’s always room for dessert.

Speaking of dessert (because, calories don’t count in lockdown) McDonald’s is releasing a new sweet treat this week, as well as bring back an old favourite – the perfect way to soothe those pandemic blues.

To celebrate Macca’s 50th anniversary the fast food outlet is launching a Birthday McFlurry which contains custard pie pieces topped with caramel sauce and hundreds and thousands sprinkles.

Fittingly there was some very Australian influences on the limited edition McFlurry flavour, McDonald’s Australia marketing manager Amanda Nakad said.

“Our new McFlurry flavour was inspired by iconic Aussie birthday party favourites including Birthday Cake and Fairy Bread, to create a nostalgic and delicious dessert that will put everyone in the birthday spirit,” she said.

“New McFlurry flavours are always a hit with our customers, so we thought this would be a delicious way to continue our 50-year celebrations.”

Macca’s is also bringing back the custard pie in response to “strong customer demand”.

“We will also be reintroducing a much-loved and highly requested crowd favourite, the Custard Pie, giving Aussies even more reason to celebrate our 50-year milestone,” Ms Nakad said.

The Birthday McFlurry and Custard Pie will be available on Uber Eats only from Wednesday for a week until they lands in Macca’s stores from July 7 for a limited run.

The two desserts aren’t the only birthday celebrations Macca’s has had so far.

Last week it brought back The Mac Jr and Grand Mac. Both burgers are a spin on the Big Mac, with The Mac Jr a single patty version of the popular burger while the Grand Mac contains 61 per cent more beef.

It has also released a series of commemorative wobble glasses which come in six different designs and come free with medium or large Mac Family Meal.

McDonald’s also temporarily reduced the price of the Big Mac – 1.1 billion of which have been sold to customers here over the last 50 years – to just 50c at all restaurants across Australia.
